Self-Employment Tax Calculator

Freelancers, contractors and small business owners pay both halves of Social Security and Medicare. Enter your net profit to estimate self-employment tax, federal income tax and a quarterly payment.

How this calculator works

SE tax = 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit (12.4% Social Security up to $184,500, plus 2.9% Medicare). Half of SE tax is deductible. Federal income tax uses 2026 brackets and the standard deduction. State tax is not included.

Frequently asked questions

When are estimated taxes due?

Quarterly, typically April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15.

Can I lower SE tax?

Deductible business expenses reduce net profit, which lowers both SE tax and income tax.

Figures use 2026 US federal tax parameters. Results are estimates only.
