How to Calculate Percentage

A percentage calculator makes everyday math fast, from tipping at a restaurant to checking a sale price or working out a grade. The word percent means per hundred, so 20 percent is 20 out of every 100. This free percentage calculator solves the three most common questions at once.

Percentage Formulas

How to Calculate a Discount Percentage

If a $60 jacket is 25% off, multiply 60 by 0.25 to get a $15 discount, then subtract it for a sale price of $45. To find the percent off from two prices, use the percentage change formula and ignore the minus sign. A drop from $80 to $60 is a 25% discount.

Percentage Increase and Decrease

To increase a number by a percent, multiply it by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. A $50,000 salary with a 4% raise becomes 50,000 x 1.04 = $52,000. To decrease, multiply by 1 minus the rate. Remember that a 50% drop followed by a 50% rise does not return you to the start: 100 falls to 50, then rises to only 75.

Percentage Points vs. Percent

When a rate moves from 4% to 5%, it rises by one percentage point but by 25 percent. This difference matters in news about interest rates, unemployment and poll results.

Everyday Uses

People use percentages for sales tax, tip calculation (15% to 20% in the US), grades, interest rates, nutrition labels and business growth. Try the calculator with your own numbers above.
