GPA Calculator
Use this GPA calculator to find your semester GPA and cumulative GPA from your grades and credit hours.
What Is a GPA Calculator?
A GPA calculator converts your letter grades and credit hours into a grade point average on the 4.0 scale used by most US high schools and colleges. Enter each course grade and its credits, and the tool shows your semester GPA instantly. Add your current GPA and completed credits to see your cumulative GPA.
How to Calculate GPA
Each letter grade is worth grade points: A is 4.0, B is 3.0, C is 2.0, D is 1.0 and F is 0. Plus and minus grades fall in between, such as A- at 3.7 and B+ at 3.3. Multiply each grade point value by the course credits to get quality points, add them up and divide by total credits. For example, an A in a 3-credit class, a B in a 4-credit class and an A- in a 3-credit class give (12 + 12 + 11.1) / 10 = 3.51.
Semester GPA vs. Cumulative GPA
Your semester GPA covers one term. Your cumulative GPA covers every term so far. To find it, enter your current GPA and credits completed, then add this semester's courses. The tool weights each by credits.
Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA
Unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale. Many high schools use a weighted GPA that adds a point for honors, AP or IB classes, so an A can count as 5.0. This calculator is unweighted. Ask your school how it calculates a weighted GPA.
What Is a Good GPA?
A 3.0 means a B average and is a common minimum for scholarships and programs. A 3.5 or higher is considered strong, and competitive graduate programs often look for 3.5 and above. Requirements vary by school and major.
How to Raise Your GPA
Focus on high-credit classes, use office hours and tutoring early and consider retaking courses if your school allows grade replacement. The calculator helps you test what grades you need next term.
